Theater: “Manteca” (Tebas Teatro)

The play “Manteca” will return to the stage this month thanks to Tebas Teatro. OnCuba News reports that this emblematic work by Cuban actor and playwright Alberto Pedro will be staged, directed by Alberto Sarraín, at the Adolfo Llauradó Theater, in Havana, Cuba, on January 11, 2024. Performances will continue from Thursday to Sunday, all at 5:00pm.

According to the Cubaescena portal, the new proposal revives the production from 30 years ago by Miriam Lezcano with Teatro Mío. Manteca will open its season at the Adolfo Llauradó stage on Thursday, January 11.

With Manteca, the media points out, the starting point for the Tebas Teatro project is marked, which will be directed by the prominent theater director and researcher. Two casts will alternate roles, with the roles of Dulce, Celestino and Pucho played by Nieves Riovalles and Indira Valdés, Faustino Pérez and Enrique Bueno, and Falconerys Escobar and David Reys.

Critic Omar Baliño recalled in Cubaescena that, in the midst of the “very harsh conditions” of 1993, Cuban theater generated a group of shows in which memory, reality and present came together. In Manteca, Baliño adds, a ritual condition was also created, in another way, although that “rituality was based on everyday life as a meeting point for all social life.” “It provided a transformed image of the Island, on two levels: on the one hand, the accumulation of a culture of things, planetary and integrative, which reached down to the plate of rice placed on the table; on the other, the crisis unleashed within that system established by the transformations that have occurred in the world,” says the critic.

Alberto Pedro (1954-2005) also belongs to memorable works such as Weekend en Bahía, Pasión Malinche, and Delirio Habanero. With Miriam Lezcano, he joined Teatro Mío, which staged a greater part of his texts.

As recalled on the Teatro de la Luna website, Manteca has reached different stages and latitudes around the world: from Cuba to Canada, passing through the US, Spain, and France.
